Arraignment was scheduled Tuesday in federal court for nine men arrested on drug charges stemming from the seizure Friday of more than 17 pounds of cocaine and heroin.

The nine - including six Mexican nationals, two Salt Lake residents and a Los Angeles man - were arrested in Salt Lake City on Friday by agents of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, said FBI Special Agent Bob Lund.

Culminating an undercover operation that began in October 1987, agents raided a Salt Lake residence and seized 9.9 pounds of high-grade cocaine estimated to be worth $1.7 million and 7.4 pounds of heroin valued at $3.9 million, Lund said.

"Cocaine had also been previously obtained (uring the investigation) which has been tested at 96 percent purity," he said.

He said narcotics agents are seeing an increase in the amount of heroin trafficking in the area, but no other arrests are planned at this time. The nine men arrested Friday were booked into the Salt Lake County Jail pending their appearances in U.S. District Court.

The task force consists of agents and officers from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, Internal Revenue Service, Immigration and Naturalization Service, Salt Lake City Police Department, Salt Lake County Sheriff's Office, Utah State Bureau of Narcotics and the U.S. Customs Service.
