Intermountain Health Care Inc. has donated $40,000 to the Brigham Young University College of Nursing.

Dr. Steven W. Lewis, senior vice president of Intermountain Health Care, presented the money to June Leifson, dean of the BYU College of Nursing, and to Jae R. Ballif, academic vice president.Lewis said the money will go to the college's endowed scholarship fund to strengthen the nursing program at a time when the hospital industry is suffering from a nationwide lack of registered nurses.

"The donation is a welcome gift, since we are trying to build up our endowed scholarship fund to provide scholarships to students and teaching assistants," said Leifson.

Mark Howard, executive director of the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center, who accompanied Lewis to the presentation, said his hospital recently hired 16 nurses from the BYU program.
