The U.S. Navy, in the person of Sonar Technician 1st Class Timothy Jay Hella, visited the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor Palmer DePaulis at the council's meeting Tuesday night.
Hella is assigned to the USS Salt Lake City, a nuclear-powered fast attack submarine commissioned in 1984 and stationed in San Diego, Calif.The sailor, a Michigan native with family members in Salt Lake City, received the 1988 Sailor of the Year Award from city leaders Tuesday.
Hella is the third recipient of the award, established to build a relationship between the boat's crew and Salt Lake City. Each year the submarine's captain chooses a crewman to visit the city.
"You've got a fine city and you're well represented in the submarine fleet," Hella told the council and mayor.
