Soviet authorities have clamped a 10 p.m. curfew on the Armenian capital, Yerevan, after clashes in which a 22-year-old youth was shot dead, according to Armenian sources in Moscow.

The sources, who spoke by telephone with relatives in Yerevan on Thursday, said the curfew had been in effect since Wednesday, when tanks and armored vehicles moved into the city.

"The city is completely shut down," an Armenian scientist told Reuters. "The strike is continuing and even people who want to go to work cannot because public transport is not operating."

Yerevan has been paralyzed by a general strike since Monday.
