Jimmie Fidler, a contemporary of such controversial Hollywood gossip mongers as Walter Winchell, Louella Parsons and Hedda Hopper, has died at the age of 89, a hospital spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Fidler died Tuesday at Westlake Community Hospital, a nursing supervisor said. The cause of death was not announced.Fidler once commanded a radio audience of 40 million people a week, second only to Winchell. His newspaper column was syndicated in 360 newspapers.

A caustic commentator with a high-pitched voice, Fidler sent "open letters" to movie stars, often blasting their behavior as well as their performances. His sign-off, "Good night to you . . . and you . . . and I do mean you!" was once heard over all three radio networks.
