South Africa's black nationalist leader Nelson Mandela is suffering from tuberculosis, and his condition had been deteriorating prior to his hospitalization last week, his attorney said Tuesday. The tuberculosis report comes as Mandela's wife, Winnie, and the outlawed African National Congress accused the government of "callous neglect" in its treatment of Mandela. "Mr. Mandela has tuberculosis," Ismael Ayob, attorney for the jailed-for-life leader of the outlawed African National Congress, said on his return from Cape Town with Mandela's wife after a visit to Tygerberg Hospital.
