A Salt Lake businessman and former member of the Utah State University Institutional Council died Saturday, July 30, in a Billings, Mont., hospital following a cerebral hemorrhage that occurred during a trip to Yellowstone National Park and Jackson, Wyo.
Phillip Asa Bullen, 73, was born Feb. 8, 1915, in Logan, to Asa and Vivian Hatch Bullen. He attended Utah State Agricultural College, where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. Following graduation in 1936, he attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., for one year.Mr. Bullen married Augusta Grant Judd on Sept. 10, 1937 in Salt Lake City, and they returned to Cambridge. He was graduated from Harvard in 1938 with a masters of business administration degree. After a U.S. Army career spanning six years, he was discharged in 1946. He remained on active reserve status, attaining the rank of lieutenant colonel.
Mr. Bullen worked for 37 years in the wholesale and retail floor covering business. He was a founding partner of CarpeTowne, Inc., a floor covering retail store in Salt Lake City, from which he retired in 1987 after 27 years.
He served on the Utah State University Board of Trustees from 1967 to 1969 and on its Institutional Council from 1969 to 1973.
He was a recipient of the USU Distinguished Alumnus Award. In December 1987, he was appointed to a second four-year term on the Utah Board of State History. Mr. Bullen was an active member of the Holladay Rotary Club and the Holladay-Cottonwood Community Council. He maintained a life-long interest in politics. (See obituary on page B-4.)
