Idaho milk production rose 4 percent in July from the same month last year to 224 million pounds, the Idaho Agricultural Statistics Service reported.

The July total also was a 2-percent increase over June and represented average production per cow of 1,390 pounds, the agency said.An average of 161,000 cows were milked in Idaho last month - 1,000 fewer than in June but a 1-percent increase over July 1987.

Nationally, July milk production in 21 selected states totaled 10.5 billion pounds, or 1 percent more than a year earlier. Per-cow production averaged 1,225 pounds, up 25 pounds from the previous July.
