As Republican vice presidential nominee Dan Quayle headed to California for a two-day campaign swing, the Press-Telegram on Friday joined the Des Moines Register in urging him to leave the ticket.

The Press-Telegram said allegations about the Indiana senator's military record and his link to a female lobbyist who appeared nude in Playboy are distracting voters from the real issues."If Dan Quayle remains on the ticket, neither Bush nor the nation will be well served," the editorial said. "Even when the candidates talk about the issues, they are not heard. Media and public attention focuses on Quayle, a handsome man with a short, undistinguished record in the House and Senate."

The editorial called Quayle hypocritical for styling himself a hawk on defense issues when he spent the Vietnam War years writing press releases in the National Guard.
