With school opening on Monday, only four high school transfers have been granted under the new transfer policy of the Salt Lake School District.
After months of debate and several proposals, the Salt Lake Board of Education adopted the new policy less than two weeks ago. Members said the policy was to address exceptional needs and special circumstances and was not intended to appease those unhappy with the high school boundary decision.District spokeswoman Jan Keller also said that school officials won't know until after a head count Monday if a large number of parents plan to keep their children out of school or transfer them to another school district.
Following the boundary decision, opponents of the boundary changes said several hundred would transfer their children to other school districts. However, by summer the actual number of requested transfers was less than 50.
