Twenty-one young Utah pianists have emerged with honors from this year's University of Utah SummerArts Competition, held Aug. 11-15 at Snowbird and on the U. campus. They are:
ELEMENTARY: 1st ($50) - Dusty Gledhill, Provo; 2nd ($25) - Melissa Haney, Orem; 3rd ($15) - Noelle Willes, Brigham City; honorable mention - Mette Janzen, Salt Lake City.ADVANCED ELEMENTARY: 1st ($100) - Janae Codner, Provo; 2nd ($50) - Francie Lin, Salt Lake City; 3rd ($25) - Doug Lowe, Provo; honorable mention - Alena Glauser, Draper.
JUNIOR: 1st ($250) - Tamami Honma, Logan; 2nd ($100) - Jenny Watson, Bountiful; 3rd ($50) - Mira Gill, Salt Lake City; honorable mention - Laura Neal, Bountiful; LaMar Watts, Richmond.
HIGH SCHOOL: 1st ($350) - Eugene Watanabe, Salt Lake City; 2nd ($150) - Phil Beck, Salt Lake City; 3rd ($50) - Craig Jorgensen, Salt Lake City; honorable mention - Anitra Mead, Bountiful.
YOUNG ARTISTS: 1st ($400) - Patricia B. Smith, Provo; 2nd ($200) - Mayde Taylor, Provo; 3rd (100) - Kenton Ford, Ogden; honorable mention - Amy Landerman, Salt Lake City.
The Utah Symphony Prize of a concerto performance went to Eugene Watanabe, who has already soloed with the orchestra on several occasions.
In addition, the American West Symphony in Sandy awarded $300 and a concerto performance to Craig Jorgensen, 17, and $200 to Kristen Landerman, 14. The two were picked at auditions Aug. 11 for South Valley pianists.
The winners were announced Wednesday evening at Snowbird at a special awards ceremony. Judges for the finals, held Monday, included workshop presenters Michael Brigida and Sam Holland and Deseret News music critic William S. Goodfellow.
