A federal jury on Friday awarded nearly $9 million to a woman, saying G.D. Searle & Co. was negligent in testing the Copper-7 intrauterine device and misrepresented it, which was a cause of the woman's sterility.

The jury awarded Esther Kociemba, 30, of Elk River $7 million in punitive damages, $1 million for emotional distress and $750,000 for pain and disability.The jury decided Mrs. Kociemba's husband, William, did not experience the loss of consortium as a direct result of his wife's use of the Copper-7 and did not award him damages.
