"The Book of Mormon prophets clearly understood that the law of Moses did not contain the fulness of the sqving principles of the gospel of Jesus Christ," wrote Daniel H. Ludlow in a Comanion to Your Study of the Book of Mormon.
"They realized the law of Moses was given to prepare the people for the greater truths which were to be revealed. In 2 Nephi 25: 24, Nephi (the son of Lehi) writes:"'And, notwithstanding we believe in Christ, we keep the law of Moses, and look forward with steadfastness unto Christ, until the law shall be fulfilled.'
"Unfortunately," observed Ludlow, "some of the people subsequesntly misunderstood this prophecy of Nephi and ssumed that the law of Moses was fulfilled when the Savior was born upon the earth."
According to their interpretation of the scriptures, they felt it was "no more expedient to observe the law of Moses." (3 Ne. 1:24.)
"However," wrote Ludlow, "it was made known unto them 'that the law was not yet fulfilled, and that it must be fulfilled in evdery whit.' (3 Ne. 1:25.)
"Later, during the three days between His crucifixtion and resurrection, the Savior spoke to the righteous Nephites living on the American continent and said 'in me is the law of Moses fulfilled.' (3 Ne. 9:17.)
"Still later the resurrected Savior appeared to the Nephites and taught '. . . verily I say unto you, one jot nor one tittle hath not passed away from the law, but in me hath all been fulfilled.' (3 Ne. 12:18.) Evidently the law of Moses was fulfilled by the Savior at the time of His crucifixion and resresurrection."
