Huntsman Chemical Corp. and Mitsubishi Corp. have received approval from the Thailand Board of Investment to build a polystyrene manufacturing plant.
The facility in Map Ta Phut, Thailand, will manufacture crystal and impact grades of polystyrene and is expected to be in operation in late 1990.Salt Lake-based Huntsman beat seven other polystyrene producers that applied for the polystyrene portion of Phase II of the National Petrochemical Corp.'s (NPC) project.
NPC is a government-owned petrochemical complex created to serve all of Asia, said Jon M. Huntsman Jr., director of International Business for the company.
"Our participation in this project fulfills, in part, our effort to supply our customers on a global basis," said Huntsman. "Other Eastern-rim projects include focus in China, India and a plant expansion in Taiwan."
Huntsman Chemical is the largest manufacturer of polystyrene in North America.
