Mike Waltrip took the checkered flag for his first Grand National win in four starts in Saturday's Busch 200 at Dover Downs International Speedway.
With an average speed of 116.073 mph, Waltrip had a .685-second margin over second-place finisher Tommy Ellis.Morgan Shepherd, Bobby Hillin and Ronald Cooper rounded out the top five finishers.
A crowd estimated at 23,000 was on hand for the race, which featured eight lead changes among four drivers in the 38-car field and four caution flags for 23 laps.
Waltrip, who won $9,850, started in the No. 5 slot for the 200-mile race on the oval at Dover's "Monster Mile."
With the win, Waltrip became the 18th different winner in 26 Busch Grand National races this year.
Waltrip, who was driving his brother Darrell's Chevrolet, said he knew he was going to run strong, but he expected to be beaten by pole sitter Harry Gant.
"It turned out he wasn't the strongest car. Brad Teague was real strong," Waltrip said.
Waltrip said his car "was a little tight" in the morning, so his crew changed the left rear springs.
"That was a big part of our success. With the weather being cool and overcast, everything worked in our favor," Waltrip said.
Gant, who was going after his third straight Grand National victory, finished seventh after setting a track record of 143.896 mph during qualifying.
"The car really didn't push. I ran up high because the engine just didn't seem to have enough power. I could keep the rpms up that way," Gant said. "I was more comfortable up there anyway. We just didn't run like we wanted."
