SHARE STATE FAIR RECOGNIZES TALENTED MUSICIANS

More than 50 young musicians were winners in this year's Utah State Fair music competition. Besides the usual vocal and instrumental, two new categories were added this year - popular music and young artists.

Increased cash awards were presented to all winners by Paul C. Pollei, coordinator of this year's competition, at a gala concert for the finalists on Saturday evening in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square.Categories were elementary (ages 8-11), intermediate (ages 12-14), junior (ages 15-18) and senior (ages 19-26), and their winners are as follows, listed in first- ($75), second- ($50) and third-place ($25) order:

STRINGS

Elementary: Heather Marian Horn, Jonathan G. Brinton and Emily Richards, with honorable mention to Jonathan Lund, Tessy Lund and Amy Rosevear. Intermediate: Jason Swigert, Amy Steenblik, and Victoria Ferris, with honorable mention to Sarah A. Brough, Adriana Vail Horne and Anne Perry. Junior: Karen Cardon, Mary L. Otterstrom and Karin Sue Hendricks, with Joseph Horne, Robert Marsden receiving honorable mention. Senior: Jennifer Jenkins, third prize.

PIANO

Elementary: Trisha Fackrell, Austin J. Chung and Robert Stander, with honorable mention to Tiffany Gledhill, Amy Greenwood, Doug Lowe. Intermediate: Becky Summerhays, Janelle Rich and Corinne Teichert, with honorable mention to Jennifer Bailey, Alena Glauser and Kristen Lauderman. Junior: Kenton Bruce Ford, Kim Bailey, Kirsten Wilson, and honorable mention, Nina Kishimoto, Winston Lee and Mary Ann Siggard. Senior: $100, Michael Munson.

VOICE

Junior: Jeanette Barker, Jason Aaron Hughes, (no third), with Ruth Cobabe, Monica Earl, N. Bennett Winters, honorable mention. Senior: Todd A. Miller, Marie-Adele Black and Cheri Clark.

BRASS

Junior: Brent Coles, third-place; honorable mention, Jason P. Brinton.

ORGAN

Junior: Shane Fellows, Carl Wadsworth, Kierstin Wendel.

WOODWINDS

Junior: April Clayton, Angela Parkinson, Rebecca McMullin, with honorable mention to Andrea Bennett, Kari Hagan and John C. Perry. Senior: Heather Tennant, second prize.

POPULAR MUSIC

Ronni Lee Sorensen, first prize, $150, and Marie Priddis, Holly McCallister, Jenni Jones (trio), second prize, $100.

Selected as Young Artist winners were Tamani Honma, piano, $300; Kristyn Gygi, flute, $200; and JoEllen Turley, alto saxophone, $100. Many other young artists and competitors were recommended for the Salute to Youth auditions.
