The town of Dinosaur, on the border of Dinosaur National Monument, has endorsed the move to upgrade the monument's status to that of a national park. About a quarter of the 200,000 acres at Dinosaur extend into Utah. Efforts to make it a national park failed in 1956 and 1985, with many testifying in Vernal in 1985 against the proposal. The resolution, passed last week, declares that changing the monument into a national park would attract many visitors and help the local economy, "providing a strong economic boost to western Colorado communities." "Tourism brings new people, new ideas and new jobs into the area," it adds. "The need for roads to be upgraded through the park is necessary for the preservation of the park."
