When a new mission president is called, both he and his wife are quickly engulfed by challenges and responsibilities. they often have their pictures in the newspaper, and receive many comments from friends about their new responsibilities.
Yet even as the parents begin making adjustments, their children often remain behind the scenes. And although they receive little attention, they, too are called upon to make sacrifices and begin a new way of life. When Jorge O. Abad was called as president of the Argentina Buenos Aires South Mission, he and his wife, Nelida Amalia, were parents of five children, Ethel Karen, 13; Paula Celeste, 12; Gustavo Eugenio, 10; Gabriel Federico, 8; and Julia, 4. While they were serving, another child, Andres, was born.
Now, a year after they have returned form their mission, the children have had a chance to evaluate the experience form their viewpoint and share their feelings.
Ethel Karen said at first she didn't undrstand the calling her parents had received. "But I was very pleased to see the reaction of my parents.
"My old friends at school didn't have many questions. but when I arrived at the mission, my new friends had many questions about the work of my father. I felt part of his calling because I told them that he was president of the mission, and taught the gospel to people. I spoke of the church and of its significance to me.
"I learned to see the progres of my parents," she said. "They were always very busy and concerned, but with much patience and joy.
"When I was sad, I tried no to show anyone, so they wouldn't worry about me. I took part in zone conferences and testimony meetings. I learned to share the gospel and the Book of Mormon freely with my teachers and friends, and also with the neighbors."
The mission years, she said, "helped me feel more certain and know with clarity the importance of establishing goals. My future goals are to complete my studies, leave for a mission and marry in the temple."
Paula Celeste said there were some very beautiful moments on the mission, as well as some fun ones. "I felt a part of my parents' calling because I helped htem at times." She said the mission helped her develop independence because her parents were often away on mission tours.
She added, "I would like to have another mission. I loved to take part in zone conferences."
Gustavo said the mission was a very good experience. "It was fun to have 150 older brohters at the same time, all the same age. They made good friends and I had the opportunity ot accompany missionaries for several hours. I enjoyed it very much."
Gabriel said his memories include the friends he made and the school he attended. During the mission, he said, he gained a personal testimony.
The Jorge O. Obad family are now members of the Hospital Ward, Bahia Blanda Argentina Stake, where he is serving as bishop.
