A latent fireworks blast at the Rice Stadium last Saturday night resulted in no serious injuries, according to Chief of University Police Wayne Shepherd.
Shortly after a fireworks display at halftime of the Utah-Hawaii football game, a blast discharged debris over the South end zone stands and onto the field. Shepherd said three people were treated for minor injuries or burns before being released.According to university officials, some of the fireworks were lodged in the firing cannister and smouldered for several minutes. People were cleared away from the area to avoid injuries. When the blast went off, it shot debris over the stands.
Athletic department officials expressed doubt that fireworks will be used again at a U. football game.
