J. Edward Johnston, former deputy director of the state Department of Highways, died in Salt Lake City on Sept. 2, 1988.
Mr. Johnston helped plan Utah's interstate highway system, as well as many other highway networks. He retired in 1970.He began his career in Nebraska in 1925 and served there as state traffic engineer and state zoning engineer for 12 years. He also served as a transportation specialist with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and as a traffic engineer for the American Automobile Association before coming to Utah in 1959.
He received a degree in civil engineering from the University of Nebraska and graduated from Yale University's Bureau of Highway Traffic.
Mr. Johnston was a member and former director of the Institute of Traffic Engineers and was chairman of the National Safety Council's Committee on Accident Records. He was also a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Highway Research Board, and the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials.
He lectured nationally to various university and business groups on highway safety and solutions to downtown parking problems.
Graveside services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sunset Gardens Cemetery, 10600 S. 17th East.
