Educators warn of "something disastrously wrong" when a survey reveals children living around the nation's capital know the names of more alcoholic beverages than of American presidents.
The poll of 180 children in the District of Columbia and suburban Maryland, released Sunday by the Center for Science in the Public Interest, found the average child between the ages of 8 and 12 could name, in statistical terms, 5.2 bottled brands but only 4.8 chief executives."This survey indicates the extent to which booze is part of the daily life of children who cannot drink legally for another 10 years," remarked Michael Jacobson, executive director of the non-profit research organization.
"It's not surprising that a recent survey by the Association for the Advancement of Health Education found that one out of four eighth-graders drank five or more alcoholic drinks on a single occasion in the two weeks prior to the survey," Jacobson said.
In the poll, Budweiser, Miller Lite, Bud Light, Coors and Bartles & Jaymes, all of which spend millions of dollars for television advertising, were among the alcohol brands most commonly named by the children.
Examples from the survey included:
-An 11-year-old boy who correctly spelled Matilda Bay, King Cobra and Bud Light but listed two presidents as "Nickson" and Rosselvet."
-A 7-year-old boy who named 10 brands of beer, wine coolers and liquor but listed among six presidents "Aprilham Linchon" and "Ragon."
