Citing work responsibilities that will keep him out of the country, Kaysville City Councilman Paul Wagaman resigned from the city's governing body earlier this week.

Wagaman's resignation was effective Wednesday, following Tuesday night's City Council meeting.Wagaman is a computer engineer with Unisys Corp. and has been working since July in Ontario, Canada. Initially he thought his assignment would be finished by the middle of this month, but Wagaman said it appears now he will be out of the country through at least mid-November and perhaps into next year.

A fifth-year councilman, Wagaman was re-elected a year ago and gives up his seat with three years remaining on the term.

City Manager John Thacker said the City Council will appoint an interim council member to serve out the remainder of Wagaman's term. State law does not set a deadline for filling the vacancy, but the council will probably act as quickly as possible, Thacker said.

Wagaman's absence at meetings in August raised the question of whether he would be able to retain his seat. State law stipulates if an elected official lives outside the city for more than 60 days, or establishes primary residency in another location, the office is vacated.

Although his attendance at Tuesday's meeting came within the 60-day limit, Wagaman said it appeared best to give up his council position.
