More than 7,500 teachers in six states remained on strike, some defying back-to-work orders and risking possible jail time, while students in one New Hampshire town ended a strike of their own.

Teachers in two Massachusetts school districts vowed to continue striking Friday despite rulings by a judge and a state commission ordering them to work.In New Jersey, teachers disobeyed a judge's back-to-work order Thursday, risking possible criminal charges but said they had not decided whether to continue the walkout Friday.

Across the nation, 7,501 instructors were on strike Thursday, affecting 115,450 students in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Massachusetts.
