Skiers and non-skiers may want to uncap the lens, advance to the next frame and trigger what could turn out to be a dream ski season . . . free skiing for the 1989-90 season, new skis and some new camera equipment.
Best part of all, however, will be the opportunity to tag along on a one-day photo shoot with one of the country's best ski photographers - Lori Peek, Hughes Martin, or Scott Markewitz.As part of the celebration of Utah's 50th year in skiing, Ski Utah, the Deseret News and the Camera Den are sponsoring a ski photo contest open to all amateur photographers. It was 50 years ago this year that Alta opened the second chairlift to operate in this country. Sun Valley introduced the first chairlift.
The photo contest starts today and all photos must be submitted to the Deseret News or one of the three Camera Den locations by 5 p.m. on March 4. Entry blanks are available at the Deseret News or Camera Den locations.
The winning photos of the Grand Prize winner and places one through three will be published in the Deseret News on March 19.
Also, all photos submitted will be reviewed by Ski Utah for possible use in its 1989-90 Ski Utah Vacation Planner. The Planner is distributed to skiers in all parts of the world that are interested in Utah skiing.
Also, top entries will be submitted for review by the Utah Travel Council for possible use in its publications.
The Grand Prize winner will receive a season pass to Park City for the 1989-90 ski season, a Breeze ski rental package and a gift certificate from the Camera Den. Also, the Grand Prize winner will receive the opportunity to shoot one day of the Park City World Cup opener in November.
The next three finishers will each receive a one-day pass to each of the 14 ski areas in Utah, a rental package from Breeze, a Camera Den gift certificate, and each will get a one-day photo shoot with one of the leading ski photographers.
There will also be several awards for Honorable Mention. Each of these winners will receive ski passes, and Ski Utah hats and T-shirts.
The contest is open to all amateur photographers. All pictures submitted must be skiing related - alpine or nordic - and must have been shot in Utah.
All submitted photos must have the name of the photographer, where it was shot and the date it was shot. The contest is open to black and white or color pictures.
Those entering can submit prints no smaller than 8 by 10, or larger than 16 by 20. They may also submit color transparencies.
Each person is limited to four entries.
Cost of entering is $6.50. Those entering, however, will get four weeks delivery of the Deseret News free. Those already taking the newspaper will have their account credited for the full amount of entering the contest.
Utah is recognized as one of the finest areas in the country for shooting ski photos. With its majestic mountains and pine forests, manufacturers from all over the world come here to shoot action and fashion photos.
The opportunities for good photos are out there for amateur photographers.
