Pioneers to the San Juan area of southern Utah made their historic descent through Hole-in-the-Rock 109 years ago. The Utah State Historical Society plans to commemorate their trek with a tour, Jan. 27-29.
The group will leave on Friday morning and travel to Wahweap Lodge, stopping at historic sites and buildings along the way. That evening western historian Gregory Crampton will give a lecture (with slides) on the history of southeastern Utah and Glen Canyon.On Saturday the tour will take boats from Wahweap Lodge to Cottonwood Canyon for a program by the descendants of the Hole-in-the-Rock party. Participants will be allowed to climb to the top of Hole-in-the-Rock, if they wish. On Sunday, the tour returns to Salt Lake City.
Cost is $158 per person for society members and $187 per person for nonmembers. The price includes transportation, two nights' lodging, boat trip and lunch.
