Two University of Utah professors will share a national award for their research paper on new technology for recovering gold from alkaline cyanide solutions.
Jan D. Miller, professor of metallurgy, and R.Y. Wan, adjunct associate professor of metallurgical engineering, will receive the Metallurgical Society's 1989 Extractive Metallurgy Technology Award. They will be honored at the society's annual meeting Feb. 27-March 2 in Las Vegas.Miller is director of the Generic Center on Comminution and associate director of the Center for Advanced Coal Technology at the University. He is an active researcher on the processing of coal and mineral resources and well known for numerous technical contributions in coal preparation, mineral processing and hydrometallurgy.
A senior metallurgist at Newmont Metallurgical Services' Newmont Mining Co., Wan received her bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Chiao Tung University in Shanghai, China, and her doctorate in metallurgy from the University of Utah.
