A 3-year-old girl who underwent a five-organ transplant operation in November died Friday at Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh.
Rolandrea "Rolly" Dodge was only the second patient to receive five transplanted organs and was the last survivor of the operation until her death. The Fruitland, N.M., girl was born with intractable secretory diarrhea, a condition that prevented her intestines from absorbing food, according to Children's Hospital spokeswoman Lynn McMahon.
McMahon said Rolly died because her body rejected the transplants, which included a liver, stomach, pancreas and small and large intestines.
Rolly was transferred from New Mexico's San Juan Regional Medical Center to Children's on Oct. 18 last year to be evaluated for a possible multiple-transplant operation, McMahon said. She underwent the operation Nov. 29.
