The cleanup of a radioactive house contaminated by a professor processing radium in the basement during the 1930s and 1940s will cost $9.5 million and involve digging up neighbors' lawns and possibly garages, federal officials say.

Contractors tore down the entire house and shipped it to a special dump site in Utah.Nuclear garbage from across the country has headed to Clive, Tooele County, where the Vitro uranium mill tailings were buried. There, Envirocare of Utah operates a licensed site to dispose of radioactive material, surrounding the Vitro tailings. This past summer, 10,000 barrels of radon-contaminated soil was to be shipped to Envirocare from New Jersey.
