A majority of Utah students can identify the Pacific Ocean and list the states that border their own.

But don't ask them to name European countries, or even all 50 states. That's the conclusion from a geographic survey of 139 Salt Lake Valley students taken by 12 cub reporters, staff writers for the Pinwheel Press, a quarterly newspaper published by the Children's Museum of Utah.

Utah students' geographic I.Q. is just one of the topics in the winter issue of the paper. The issue will also feature Joe Spendlove, a prize-winning geography teacher, and Brad Dennis, an 8-year-old geography genius.

The Pinwheel Press is distributed as a supplement to the museum's Parent Express. Youth 10 to 13 years old can be reporters for the newspaper by signing up for the five week writing class, which begins at the museum Jan. 28.
