Utah quarterback Scott Mitchel and Brigham Young defensive back Eric Bergeson were named the Western Athletic Conference's offensive and defensive players of the week on Monday.
Mitchell, a 6-6, 230-pound junior, completed 28 of 48 passes for 350 yards and six touchdowns in Utah's 50-45 victory over Texas-El Paso on Saturday. The six scoring passes tied a school record and was one short of the WAC record. He leads the nation with 23 scoring passes through six games.Bergeson was credited with six tackles and two interceptions as Brigham Young stopped defending WAC champion Wyoming 36-20 in Provo. Bergeson had one interception in each half as the Cougars handed the Cowboys their second WAC loss.
