The guy with the razor glove is out. The guy with the tights and cape is in, along with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

The assessment from costume stores as Halloween approaches is Batman is boffo and Freddie Krueger, of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" fame, is a bore. But watch out Bruce Wayne, because the turtles are also hot this year."We've sold out of Batman twice," Nelson Maddox, who owns a Baton Rouge, La., costume store, said this week. "He's this year's Freddie Krueger."

Preston Rockhold, who owns a costume shop where the discriminating can pick a spare hand, bones, ears, tails, torsos and noses, agrees the caped crusader is big business.

"Batman is big," he said.

Debra Maddox says her shop is selling handy stick-on wounds this year. She also says the phone's ringing off the hook for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle costumes.

"Professional gore sells," said her husband, Nelson Maddox.
