The first U.S. astronaut to orbit the planet will take a more leisurely, down-to-earth ride on New Year's Day in the lead float of a parade.
Sen. John Glenn, D-Ohio, was named grand marshal Thursday for the 101st annual Tournament of Roses parade down Colorado Boulevard on Jan. 1."John Glenn has a unique perspective on the world," said Don W. Fedde, tournament president. "He had a vision of a world of harmony while orbiting above in space that he has worked diligently to bring about here on Earth."
The 68-year-old Glenn mused about the 51/2-mile parade route he'll be traveling, and the route he took around Earth aboard Friendship 7 in 1962. "In the spacecraft that would have taken just over one second. It would be a fast view, wouldn't it?" he asked.
