Armed civilians kidnapped a Swiss flight attendant in northern Lebanon, the Foreign Ministry said. The woman was the third Swiss national abducted in the country in a week.

She was kidnapped Sunday while visiting the Mediterranean port of Tripoli, ministry spokesman Clemens Birrer said Thursday.Birrer said her parents had asked authorities not to publicize the case, but he confirmed the kidnapping after being asked to comment on unattributed news reports. Her name and age were withheld at her parents' request, Birrer said.

Switzerland asked Syria to help locate the woman, he said. Syrian troops control much of northern Lebanon.

On Oct. 6, two Swiss Red Cross workers, Elio Erriquez and Emmanual Christen, were abducted in southern Lebanon. No group claimed responsibility for the kidnappings, and no demands have been made.

Birrer said he did not assume there was any connection between the kidnappings.

In all, 19 Westerners are missing in Lebanon, including eight Americans.
