Planting trees near your house will help ease the greenhouse effect as well as reduce your energy needs.

Three mature shade trees next to every U.S. home could save enough utility-generated energy to decrease carbon dioxide emissions by up to 18 million tons annually, according to Georgia-Pacific Corp., a forest product firm. The burning of fossil fuels contributes to the greenhouse effect, which is caused by higher atmospheric levels of carbon dioxide that trap heat and increase surface temperatures. Trees, however, absorb carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrates for nourishment during photosynthesis and release oxygen.
