Heavyweight boxer Tommy Morrison hopes to score a knockout outside the ring in his first round of acting in Sylvester Stallone's next movie.
Morrison, 20, will play an aspiring boxer named Tommy Durrock in Stallone's "Rocky V," said Morrison's manager, John Brown, at a news conference Friday. In the new film, due out next June, Stallone's Rocky Balboa character has aged and become a trainer.
"My understanding is Stallone is an ex-fighter, who has lost all his money and is back in Philadelphia," said Brown. "He's running a gym and takes on this persistent kid, which he didn't want to do at first. From there, I presume they go on to achieve great heights."
Stallone first saw Morrison fight on ESPN and was impressed with the way he handled himself in the ring and in post-fight interviews, Brown said.
"The No. 1 job for Tommy still remains his boxing career," said Brown. "Tommy will be allowed to train while he's on the set."
When Morrison, whose record is 17-0 with 15 knockouts, meets Charlie Hostetter at Kansas City's Kemper Arena on Oct. 26, Stallone is expected to be in Morrison's corner, and four camera crews will film the fight and crowd scenes for use in the movie.
