The Republican Party is the party of the future, willing to tackle the nation's problems, Sen. Orrin Hatch told GOP leaders Saturday night. And the party's future lies in the West, the Utah senator added.

Speaking to the Western Republican Leadership Conference, Hatch urged them to remember the principals that brought the Republican Party to power during the Reagan years."We are right," Hatch said. "The principles that the Republican Party represents are shared by the vast majority of Americans. The Republican Party is the protector of the American dream, the keeper of the flame."

The GOP has been able to capture the White House, Hatch said, and for six years controlled the U.S. Senate but lost sight of its goals, getting bogged down in the myriad problems of leadership.

"My friends, if we possess the values that mirror the attitudes, hopes and aspirations of the majority of Americans, why are we still outside the legislative window, looking in?" Hatch asked.

"Why don't we control more state legislatures, the House and the Senate? Why can we win the White House so readily and still suffer defeat in the legislature?" he asked.

"I believe the answer is rather simple. We need to re-define our future and prepare for the next century," Hatch advised. "We need to re-establish what makes us Republicans.

"We need to come to terms with the future and prepare our party for the next decade. We need to go back on the offensive," Hatch said.
