In 1988, U.S. manufacturers produced 38.4 million tons of paper.

That was enough to supply more than two tons to every person living in the state of New York, says Georgia-Pacific Corp., a pulp and paper product company.Of the paper produced in 1988, 5.9 million tons were for newsprint and 5.4 million tons were for tissue paper.
