President Hosni Mubarak met Libyan leader Col. Moammar Gadhafi in Tobruk Tuesday on the first visit by an Egyptian head of state to Libya in about 18 years.

It was the second meeting in less than 24 hours between the two Arab leaders, who held talks Monday in the Egyptian Mediterranean town of Marsa Matrouh in an effort to normalize relations, severed in 1977.The Middle East News Agency said Mubarak, accompanied by a senior delegation, was received by Gadhafi at Gamal Adbel Nasser Air Base in Tobruk, 187 miles west of Marsa Matrouh.

Mubarak received a red carpet reception, the news agency said, as did Gadhafi upon his arrival by motorcade a day earlier in Egypt.

In their talks in Matrouh - Gadhafi's first visit to Egypt in nearly 16 years - the two leaders agreed on reopening their joint border for travel by citizens of both countries.
