A spate of racially charged attacks on and near the Brown University campus has prompted the school's president to consider asking for federal assistance to protect students.

In a letter to students released Tuesday, Vartan Gregorian said racism apparently was the motivation for some of the attacks."The adminstration will join the local, state, and, if need be, federal law enforcement agencies to prosecute the perpetrators of such cowardly acts," Gregorian wrote.

In a letter Monday to Providence Mayor Joseph R. Paolino Jr., Gregorian also said he might ask for unspecified federal assistance.
