A 19-year-old man accused in the weekend theft of a 600-pound safe containing $7,000 from a La Verkin grocery store has been arraigned in 5th Circuit Court.

Shawn Angel of La Verkin was ordered held in the Washington County Jail pending payment of $10,000 bond. The arraignment on theft and burglary charges was continued 10 days to allow Angel time to contact an attorney. The safe was taken from the store about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, said Sheriff Glenwood Humphries. The sheriff was investigating the theft when he found the suspect's car and the safe on a dirt road near the La Verkin River.

The burglars had attempted to pry open the safe, he said, but apparently fled on foot when they saw the sheriff's car approaching. Humphries said he also was looking for a 16-year-old Hurricane youth in connection with the theft.
