A Riverdale woman, who was scheduled to stand trial Tuesday in a felony case involving an adoption scam, instead entered guilty pleas to two counts of theft by deception following plea bargain negotiations.

Rae Jean Page Lewis, 38, admitted to taking $3,000 from a California couple with promises that Lewis had a baby for them to adopt. The second theft by deception case charged that Lewis represented herself as an attorney in an attempt to help a Weber County woman with water rights.

In exchange for her guilty pleas, the prosecution agreed not to file charges against her in a third theft by deception case and five forgery charges.

Heward said Lewis also told the couple that the baby's mother had died and she needed more money to find another child. Heward said that Lewis took the money with no intention of finding a baby.

Second District Judge David Roth set sentencing for Nov. 8.
