Alta High School janitor and City Council candidate Scott L. Cowdell, 41, has pleaded not guilty to a charge that he assaulted a student.

The plea to the Class B misdemeanor charge was filed in 3rd Circuit Court by mail by Cowdell's attorney, Frank R. Pignanelli. The 17-year-old student told police he was pushed into a wall, knocked to the floor, choked and pushed down some steps by Cowdell.

Cowdell's lawyer said the student was in the lunchroom trying to break a chair when Cowdell asked him to stop and he refused, then started to use obscenities.

When Cowdell told the youth he was taking him to the principal's office, the student started making aggressive motions toward Cowdell, Pignanelli said, so Cowdell grabbed him by the shirt and the two tripped, with Cowdell falling on top of the student.
