After leading the nation in pass efficiency for two weeks, BYU's Ty Detmer has slipped to No. 2, behind Virginia's Shawn Moore. Detmer fell from a rating of 163.8 last week to 159.8 this week. Moore's rating: 161.8.
Detmer also ranks No. 2 in total offense, behind Houston's Andre Ware (361.7 to 391.8, respectively). So far this season Detmer has completed .605 percent of his passes (133 of 220) for 2,218 yards, 14 touchdowns, 7 interceptions.
In team statistics, BYU ranks No. 2 in pass offense (381.5) and total offense (528.2) and No. 16 in total defense (allowing an average of 286.5 yards a game).
BYU NO. 1: Jim Doan, a statistician at the Univerity of California-Davis, recently computed the team pass-efficiency ratings for each school during the 1980s, and here's what he wrote: "Teams with the highest per-game passing averages are not likely to have a particularly high pass-efficiency rating, unless the school is Brigham Young."
According to Doan's calculations, BYU is No. 1 in pass efficiency in the 1980s with a rating of 144.5. Division II UC-Davis is No. 2 (138.8), followed in order by UCLA, Miami (Fla.), and Iowa. Utah (130.0) is No. 7 and Weber State (119.7) No. 34.
The top three all-time NCAA career pass-efficiency leaders are from BYU - Jim McMahon, Steve Young, Robbie Bosco.
QB UPDATE: Question: Who would play quarterback for BYU if both Ty Detmer and Sean Covey went down with injuries? It might be Jonathan Ord, a sophomore walk-on from California. The Cougars hope to redshirt sophomore Chris Hoge, the official No. 3 quarterback.
Ord, a converted wide receiver, has played well for the BYU junior varsity team. In a 42-41 loss to Air Force last week, he completed 25 of 40 passes for 405 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception.
NOTES: There's another rising star in the Detmer family. Ty Detmer's younger brother Koy is the starting varsity quarterback at his high school in Mission, Texas. He threw for 330 yards in one game. And he's only a sophomore. Does this sound familiar? . . .
Cornerback Brian Mitchell is 10th nationally in interceptions, with 4 . . . During the BYU-Wyoming game in Provo, BYU collected $20,364 in relief funds for hurricane victims in South Carolina . . . It has been reported that CBS will televise the Nov. 11 BYU-Air Force game nationally.
