Marriott Corp. plans to establish a telemarketing customer service operations center in South Salt Lake, employing between 170-180 people, at the beginning of next year.

The hospitality giant, based in Washington, D.C., will merge its centers in Omaha, Neb., and Marina Del Rey, Calif., into the proposed Salt Lake center at 310 W. Bear Cat Drive in the Times Square business park.Phone operators at the center will handle inquiries about Marriott's frequent traveler program.

A Marriott spokesman said Salt Lake was chosen after market studies because of the area's labor pool and "very healthy environment for customer services."

Marriott would be the third major telemarketing operations to locate along the Wasatch Front in the past two years. The most recent customer service centers to move to Utah include Sears, J.C. Penney and Holiday Inn.
