It's Adopt-A-Dog Month again as the Humane Society of Utah joins with 900 animal shelters across the United States to encourage animal lovers to bring home a shelter dog during October.

The Humane Society shelter, 4613 S. 4000 West, is open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 2:30 p.m.Katharine Brant, development director, said fewer than 20 percent of the dogs brought to the shelter each year are adopted. She said the October observance is intended to improve public awareness and, hopefully, improve on that figure.

Those adopting dogs during October will receive a "doggie bag" filled with dog treats, a congratulatory letter, a dog skills training and care booklet and coupons for discounts on dog-care products.
