Hawaii quarterback Garrett Gabriel passed for 194 yards and two touchdowns as the Rainbows amassed 557 offensive yards in defeating New Mexico, 60-14, in a Western Athletic Conference game here Saturday night.
The Rainbow offensive line opened huge holes all night as Hawaii rushed for 363 yards. Lamar Young led with 81 yards on 10 carries, all in the third quarter.UH is now 2-1 in the WAC, 4-1 overall. The Lobos fell to 1-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Jeff Sydner took pitches of 28 and 33 yards to account for all 61 yards in a two-play touchdown drive opening the fourth quarter to give Hawaii a 43-6 lead.
The Rainbow defense gave New Mexico quarterback Jeremy Leach fits all night, sacking him eight times for 46 yards, including a third-quarter safety by linebacker Herman Talley. Talley finished with eight tackles and three sacks.
Mike Tresler's 63-yard interception return for a touchdown early in the fourth quyater made it 50-6 Hawaii.
After 177 first-half passing yards, Hawaii went to the ground in the second half to put the Lobos away. Young picked up 35 yards rushing before Gabriel hit Dan Ahuna for an 8-yard touchdown and a 27-3 lead.
The Lobos' only touchdown came on a 20-yard pass from Leach to Eric Morgan in the fourth quarter.
