Rescuers Friday pulled bodies from rubble left by a series of earthquakes and aftershocks in north China that killed at least 29 people, injured more than 150 and destroyed 10,000 homes. Medics treated the injured in makeshift outdoor clinics.

"The problem is serious, and the casualties may increase," Zhang Xia, a Communist Party official in the northern Shanxi Province, told the official China Daily newspaper.Chetian Reservoir Dam, located near the epicenter of the quake in Shanxi Province, cracked under the strain of the temblors and was in danger of collapsing and flooding a heavily populated area, Chinese television reported.

Television from the stricken area showed scores of collapsed houses, with rescue workers using logs and other crude implements to lift the rubble to search for survivors and extricate the dead.
