Hungary's Parliament, meeting to move Hungary closer to democracy, voted Friday to disband a militia that was created to protect the Communist Party after the 1956 revolt.

The legislature also approved proposals to rehabilitate victims of political trials during Hungary's years of Communist oppression.The bill had been opposed by the Socialist Party, which assumed power after the Communist Party was formally dismantled Oct. 7. Of votes cast on the issue, 274 were in favor of termination, with six against and 30 abstentions.
