Ministry of Agriculture officials Friday began slaughtering 5,000 salmonella-infected chickens owned by a group of nuns who previously had locked themselves in a coop to protect their flock.

The hens' necks were wrung and the carcasses were put in cardboard boxes that were loaded onto trucks for deliver to a dump site.
