Thousands of people living near a gas pipeline in western Siberia were evacuated after an explosion and fire caused by a rupture in the line, which was under repair, Soviet television reported.

In a report from Tobolsk, 1,000 miles southeast of Moscow, the evening news program Vremya said Sunday night that the rupture occurred on a section of the same pipeline that exploded June 4, killing 607 people in a nearby train. No injuries or deaths were reported in the blast in a remote, sparsely populated area.
